Lilac's Impressions: Spring 2013 (Week 2)

Well, folks, we’re coming down the home stretch! Last week I knocked down four series out of my ten. All we have left are the episode threes of Attack on Titan, The Devil is a Part Timer, Flowers of Evil, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Kareneval, and Red Data Girl! Let’s see where this week takes us!

Best part of the episode!
RDG Red Data Girl
Episode 3

Last week, I mentioned that I wanted to hold off on episode three till I could throw it in with the other shows I’ve been watching. Something I forgot to mention last week about this series is how simplistic and beautiful it looks. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a surreal looking series from PA Works, so props to them. As for this episode, I’m starting to sense a slow paced trend in these episodes. It had a little more then the first episode, but not as much as the second episode did. I have to commend the consistency this series has. My only concern now, is wether or not this show will become forgettable to me down the line. For right now, I’m liking what I’m seeing. RDG is going to get a tentative pass from me. Am I still worried? Sure. But the only way to get rid of those worries is by watching more.

Final Grade: Tentative Pass

Nai's kinda adorable though...
Kareneval
Episode 3

I didn’t mention this before, but I find Nai kind of annoying and useless. From episode one, Nai has not contributed a damn thing. And I was this close to dropping the series until the part where ya know, he’s some human/animal hybrid thing came up in the third episode. Oh ok. I guess that’s fine. But because of this, we’re suddenly hurled into finding out Nai’s origins. That’s not bad, but I’m slowly getting fed up with this. I’m just kinda confused and kinda annoyed. But somehow, I’m still interested. I knew this one was going to be the one that gives me the hardest time when it got to this week. Out of all six of these shows, I had the feeling this choice would be the toughest. But, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, Kareneval is going to get an EXTREMELY Tentative Pass from me. I want to like this show, I really do! It just needs to smarten the hell up!

Final Grade: EXTREMELY Tentative Pass

So much eye candy this season!
Gargantia on Verdurous Planet
Episode 3

When you’re coming from one place where morals are completely different than the other place, you sometimes have to adapt to your new surroundings or else you’re going to be in a world of trouble. This episode is what it’s about for Ledo. Not only does he have to figure out a new language, but he now learns a new set of morals from the people of Gargantia. I can see this as something of a struggle for Ledo down the line, which would make for a good plot point. And now that things are settled down and he can stay on the ship, Gargantia only has nine more episodes. Will the first three episodes turn it into a curse later on? I don’t know. But, I am enjoying this series and would like to continue it.

Final Grade: Pass

One of those moments I talked about.
Flowers of Evil
Episode 3

What the hell is Nakamura’s problem? This girl is really getting on my nerves. I want to understand what her reasoning is for the things she’s doing to Kasuga, but just saying you want to see the people tormented makes you extremely unlikeable. Now that I have that rant out of the way, I’m still rather iffy on the series as a whole. I’m finally getting used to the visuals, with some of them actually kind of striking and giving it some interesting moments. I just can’t get Nakamura figured out and it’s going to bug me till the end of time. But what to give this series as a grade. I sense that Nakamura has some psychological stuff going on, plus her slowly growing relationship with Kasuga keeps this series still interesting.... Ok. I’m going to give Flowers of Evil a tentative pass. I’m still very concerned about this show, but I’m willing to give it a little more time to figure it out. Just don’t be completely worthless and a waste of time, please.

Final Grade: Tentative Pass

Oh Chi, you big breasted silly girl you...
The Devil is a Part Timer
Episode 3

Last week, I said I was really really excited for this series because it hasn't disappointed me! This week, I think it's still going strong! Granted there aren't as many moments of rolling on the floor laughter, however there is more plot going on. What with the mystery caller, the earthquakes, and now Chi entering the fray as though she can hear someone warning her. This series is by far my favorite of the season thus far, and there is no way I'm dropping this one. It would have to pull something really really dumb in order for me to hate it.

Final Grade:BIG FREAKING PASS!!

I'M FLYING!!!
Attack on Titan
Episode 3

Last week I mentioned how Attack on Titan had the problem of never slowing down. Well, this time it did. But maybe a little bit too much. I loved the fact that the series decided to give some more focus on Eren as he goes through a few ordeals while training, and that’s the kind of character development I like in my shows. This episode may be the weakest of the three, but having an episode that slows everything down rather then continuing the action isn’t a bad thing. Without those slow moments, we wouldn’t have a good series that helps balance things out. Attack on Titan is going to be getting a pass from me. Wether or not these extremely slow episodes will continue, I’m not sure. However, if this means a bit more time in the character development area, I have no problem with this.

Final Grade: Pass

  1. I think Devil Survivor 2 is doing VERY well, especially with how different it is from the original game so far. And yes, this is bias due to me loving the game.

    OK, no it isn't.

    OK, yes it is.
