Lilac's Impressions: Fall 2013 (Week 2, Pt. 1)

Alrighty! By the end of Week 1, we’ve gone from 18 series to 12 with Arpeggio, BlazeBlue, Galilei Donna, I Couldn’t Become a Hero, Log Horizon, and Unbreakable Machine Doll getting the axe. Diabolik Lovers has been passed for the time being, and there is still no word on Pupa as of now, though there is a new trailer out..... So, we're down to 10 shows this week! Let’s get into the first half of Week Two!!

Beyond the Boundary
Episode 2

I’m not sure what to make of the show right now. It seems like it’s more of a Slice of Life with Action elements in it, but I think it’s dying off for me. Some of the characters are either kind of flat or uninteresting. Plus there’s no sign of an actual plot forming, which still concerns me quite a bit. This one is a rather tough case, but I think, at this point, I’m ready to drop Beyond the Boundary. It’s really pretty, but it hasn’t grabbed my attention like some of the other series did in their first episode alone. I’ll probably pick it up later on, but I don’t think this is one I’d be willing to keep up with week after week. Sorry Kyo Ani. Maybe just bring in more Free instead?

I HAS EMOTIONS!!!
Coppelion
Episode 2

From the beginning we are told that our three main heroines are genetically engineered dolls created for a rescue mission. However, we get a sense of them being real people from the beginning, and this episode solidifies this point even more. Not only that, but this episode brings in a more somber tone and helps to create this world even further. This show is really growing on me, so I can’t say no to another episode. I want to see more of this world and the toll it’s taking on humanity. This is just becoming really interesting to me, and I can possibly see myself keeping up with the show faithfully once the Impressions are done for this season. Coppelion gets another week from me.

Golden Time
Episode 2

This episode of Golden Time has made me realize something... It’s rather cliched. At least Koko’s character is. She’s a rich heiress with a strong personality, but she feels rather invisible since everyone in school doesn’t want to approach her due to fear of rejection. Some people would be turned off by this right away, which makes sense. However, I’m still liking it because of the college setting. There aren’t many series that take place in college, and bringing in a rather cliched love story into a college setting is interesting to me. Plus that party the tea club had was rather crazy! Golden Time gets another week from me. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Why am I naked?
Kill La Kill
Episode 2

I feel like I should point this out first. The title of this episode is: So Sexy She Might Pass Out. Where does Trigger come up with this stuff?! Anywho, episode two. I get the feeling that we’re going to be seeing a lot of Mako getting herself in danger cause of how dense she is. But we do get a little more time learning about the odd uniform and a tiny bit of back story. It’s still has that ongoing fast pace from the first episode, so I can’t knock the show, at this point, for keeping its consistency. It would be nice to see it slow down just a tiny bit, but that’s not going to be happening any time soon. And I am totally fine with this now. It’s a lot of fun to watch, so I will keep rooting for Kill La Kill into Week Three!

Nagi no Asukara
Episode 2

Last week, I mentioned my concerns with the story of Nagi no Asukara and how it kind of seems like a rehashing of Romeo and Juliet. This episode we don’t have much more to the story, however we do get a taste of the inner workings of the ocean village. Particularly if you decided to be with someone from the surface. This changes things a little bit, adding a bit of politics to the show. This is fine by me cause I’d love to learn about this village even more and why the humans on the surface don’t take to them very kindly. I’m fine with keeping this show on for one more week, as long as I get more bits and pieces of this village and the lives that these people lead. World building is important in any form of medium, and, so far, Nagi no Asukara is doing this rather nicely.

Strike the Blood
Episode 2

This one is still a rather tough one for me so maybe writing it out will help me make a decision here. There’s a little bit of exposition this episode regarding Yukina and why she’s on this mission of hers. Plus the action isn’t bad. The problem here is what the show does in its off time that bothers me. The majority of the episode is spent with little exposition and mostly pandering in the hopes of either character development or a potential romance. I like the concept and everything, but the execution isn’t strong enough to let me pass it into Week Three. Sorry, but I guess I’m only getting sadistic vampires this season.

That’s it for this half of Week 2! The second half will be posted on Friday with the remaining four shows. Until then, otaku on my friends!
